“Music became a real career choice for me around 15, when I started writing my own music with my brother Brendan,” says Canadian actress turned singer Alexz Johnson. “Music has always been my main passion,” she says. “With acting I sort of feel like it’s a ‘luck of the draw’ type situation.” After a stint on Disney’s So Weird the multi-talented performer soon moved on to a role as a fictional pop singer on the Canadian series Instant Star, but by 2008 she was writing and producing music full time. “With music I can share my experiences and hopefully give people something they can relate to. Moving to New York really threw me into the live music scene and I couldn’t see myself stopping after that.”

Since then Johnson has seen a string of musical successes including the release of her debut album in 2010 and a remix album in 2011. In 2012 she launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to fund her US tour for her forthcoming EP Skipping Stone. Within 24 hours, she reached her $30,000 goal and by the final day she had surpassed it raking in $50,000 to use toward touring. “It was scary! I had no idea I would raise the money. It was a vulnerable gamble but it was really inspiring to see how many ? were fighting for me to tour the US.” Johnson has since stayed busy releasing three demo albums: The Basement Recordings I, II, and III and a documentary chronicling her tour. Her schedule is back-to-back with a US Tour in spring, including SXSW, and recording her second album, due to be released in 2013.

I don’t know what can be done to sort this out outside of Facebook shedding some light into what they see is going on. Facebook was reportedly cracking down on Fake Likes and seems to have not commented on this new phenomenon with what Alexz and other artists have been noticing these past few months. I hope all her Likes are legitimate but looking at what’s going on they might be thousands of spam accounts which can only hurt her in the long run.

Hopefully things will return to normal sooner than later.

I felt it was a good time to share with you another original demo… I’m feeling pretty thankful these days.. I’m so excited I have the opportunity to record this new album.

This song “Barely Holding On” was one I co-wrote with Mike Elizondo and David Ryan Harris. It was written while I was signed with Epic/Sony working on a few extra tracks for the Weight album that my brother Brendan and I wrote.
In the process of getting ready to record, I’ve been going through a ton of new and older material and in doing so I’ve come across some songs that are super special to me, capturing a time in my life so truthfully. This song is one of them..

House Of Bodies, my personal thoughts.

I thought it would be appropriate for me to post my thoughts and feelings on the recent Netflix release of House Of Bodies, here on my personal blog. This won’t be long.

As some of you may know, I am a key character in the film. The abrupt release being on Netflix surprised me as much as the Director, Alex Merkin. I had not seen, or even been privy to an edit of the film, nor had any of the actors for that matter.

It saddens me that so much talent, passion and hard work lead to such a poor edit of our film. An edit that doesn’t lend itself to the script at all. An edit that we never would have signed up to be involved in. It’s embarrassing, and diminishes the craft.

This film came into my life at a time that was completely kismet. I had just moved to NYC and needed something of substance to lock down my visa so I could continue to perform, tour, record and persue my music in the US.

In the end, fear based thinking and money seems to win the race when working amongst companies that treat the creative process like a manufacturing house.

There really isn’t much of a lesson to be learned in these situations.. maybe an understanding of the inundation of fear-based thinking in the film industry. Regardless, I am so proud of the cast and crew involved in this film — it was so much fun spending time and falling in love with our characters… Alex Merkin was a kick ass director who gave so much freedom to express, screw up and grow. – Thank you, everyone. x
