Although Alexz Johnson was drawing comparisons to Celine Dion when she was just 11, that was around the same time she turned her focus from music to acting. It was a temporary shift: after starring roles in the Disney series “So Weird” and the CTV show “Instant Star,” Johnson returned her attention to music. The Canadian singer and actress today premieres a new song, “Let ’Em Eat Cake,” on Speakeasy.

It’s a sultry tune that showcases Johnson’s sweet, strong vocals over sinewy guitar and a simple kick drum. Her voice changes from defiant on the verse to wistful and airy on the multi-tracked chorus as the drums build and synthesizers swell up behind the guitars. The tune is the title song from Johnson’s upcoming album.
More In On the Record

“‘Let ’Em Eat Cake’ feels like my biography up to this point,” Johnson says by email. “It’s an honest album written during a time of overcoming heartbreak and a heartfelt reflection of my journey as an artist in an ever-changing industry.”

The album, her second, is the follow-up to Johnson’s 2010 debut “Voodoo.” She’s also released a handful of EPs, a live album and several compilations of demo recordings. “Let ’Em Eat Cake” is due Oct. 14. What do you think of the title track? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
