Alexz Johnson is neither of these. Instead, this Canadian pop songstress (who now resides in Brooklyn) is a serial entertainer.

Having experienced success as an actress and a singer-songwriter, appearing in shows like “So Weird” and “Instant Star,” this mega-talent is poised to drop her new full-length through PledgeMusic, and we caught up with her for a quick second to hear about her current campaign.

Is it difficult to balance all aspects of the entertainment business that you’re involved in?

Right now, very much so. I’m sort of managing myself and touring at the same time. It’s definitely a challenge, but also super empowering at the same time. I like having the control musically and being able to work with such talented musicians — it’s all so awesome. A lot of work, but awesome.

Have you found the experience in acting beneficial for your career as a musical artist or vice versa?

I’ve found it all a blessing. I feel the acting hands itself to the music — the stage performance and being comfortable with meeting the fans on a regular basis — it all helps! Although, I’ve had to take a backseat on acting to focus on music to tour and make the standard of sound where I feel it needs to be. It’s hard to do both really well independently.

You toured last summer on the support of fans with a campaign. What did you learn about your fans with that?

I learned how there is a paradigm shifting in the music industry. I learned how important it is to build a direct connection with the people buying your music, sort of like it was in the 1960’s … Woodstock days.

What made you come to the direct-to-fan model to release a new album?

I had to be fearless. I didn’t know what to expect, or what to ask for. I just knew it was the only avenue I had at the time to get on tour … ask for help. It was humbling, and in return an exchange for the music the fans wanted to hear live for so long.

You have some great live clips in your video and elsewhere online. What was the last great live show you saw?

Oh my goodness … I love going to live shows. It’s my favourite thing — last great show I saw was M83 in San Diego.

Alexz has launched a PledgeMusic campaign to fund her newest album which I’m hope all of you know about 😉 They interviewed her recently.
