Mistaken Identity
As I got onto the bus to go to class today I thought I heard a familiar voice. I go to WCU and their buses(Catrans) often have the radio on. I was sure they were playing Alexz Johnson. So I sat down and tried to concentrate on it more. I was surprised when I figured out it was really Celine Dion! That moment was when it really clicked for why Alexz was called “The West Coast Celine”. The song was It’s All coming Back To Me Now.
I had to give myself a small laugh that I made the mistake. Alexz was definitely welcome that early in the morning as a stress reliever before class and I was hoping it was her. That the one time I would mistake her voice it would be Celine was quite telling. Both to her credit and in how quickly my ears pekred up at the slightest chance one note coming from the bus’s radio my be her singing. I really wish it was her, she stands to gain a lot of fans appealing to college students.
I also need to point out I don’t live in Canada nor have I ever been there. So “The West Coast Celine” nickname I know she’s had is, at best, just an observation of her singing history here in the States. I wish I was fortunate enough to have lived there when she was going through this stage of her life. I’m sure it would have been an exciting time to discover her amazing talent so young. Alexz Johnson is pretty much unknown in the US. I wonder if they’d compare her to Celine Dion too.
One final thing. Listening to Celine Dion in the context I know have I really noticed how much control Alexz has over her voice. It’s just incredible. If she’s going to get compared to someone, and we know it’ll happen at some point, Celine Dion is definitely not teh worst comparison for her. I think it’s very complimentary.
