Alexz Johnson has come a long way since she first appeared on the Disney Channel a decade ago. With her first solo album, “Voodoo,” Johnson introduces a sound virtually unexplored by any other contemporary artist, pulling from such inspirations as Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.

The album is an eclectic compilation of various styles of music from hip hop to tribal beats, sometimes within the same song. Each track tells its own story and creates a distinct vibe, while at the same time allowing each song to flow flawlessly into the next.

“ L.A. Made Me” tells the story of a girl caught up in becoming famous and losing sight of what is important. “Look at Those Eyes” is a haunting ballad about a painful experience. “Boogie Love” is a feel-good song perfect for road trips.

“Trip Around the World,” the first single from the album, is about the troubles Johnson had while trying to record an album under a major label.

This album is nearly 10 years in the making. After multiple label changes, Johnson finally settled with Epic to record her first album. But two years into the recording process, Epic cut a third of their artists, including everyone who had yet to release an album. Johnson did not give up, but immediately started over from the beginning. Voodoo is the resulting product, and it is definitely magical.
