When it comes to Alexz Johnson it’s obvious that she is one talented young woman. Born in New Westminster, British Columbia, she set out at a young age doing what she loved most.
As a kid Alexz was singing for family and different occasions that presented to her. By the age of around eleven, she had started off her acting career by appearing in the television series “So Weird”. A few years after that and she landed the lead role on the show “Instant Star” – which aired from 2004-2008.
Alexz Johnson is truly one of the most talented and inspirational artist/actress that I’ve followed since I was a kid. In a way, it feels as though I’ve grown up with her because I first discovered her, alongside my best friend, shortly after I turned ten years old. It’s now been over seven years since I first discovered her, and well, in that time she’s done nothing but blow me away.
From playing the lead character in Instant Star for four years to playing twins in her 2009 movie “Stranger With My Face” she’s had the chance to show off her true acting skills. Beyond that, she’s also appeared in a few other television episodes and documentaries – all capturing her different acting abilities/skills perfectly.
Now at just twenty-four, Alexz Johnson has two amazing albums titled, “Voodoo” – released March 9th 2010 and “Reloaded” – released April 26th 2011. She’s also going to be heading out for a tour come summer 2011.
Having just met her when she played Maxwell’s Music House in Waterloo, ON on May 19th 2011 I’m so excited to see what she does next! Alexz Johnson has gained an incredibly large fan base throughout the years and she treats every single fan as though they’re family.

Amy Blackwell: Hey hey Alexz! How are you?
Alexz Johnson: I’m really well! Thank you for asking.
Amy Blackwell: Shall we start? 🙂
Alexz Johnson: Lol, yes!
Amy Blackwell: Your brother Brendan Johnson does a lot of stuff with you such as writing and playing in videos. I read that there are eight other siblings other than you and Brendan. Is this true and are any of the others into acting or music?
Alexz Johnson: It’s true. I’m in the middle of a family of 10 children total. Brendan (29) is a song-writer/producer. My younger brother Zack (18) is the lead singer of a band called Sally’s Hot (@sallyshotband) and the youngest Johnson, Garrison is a singer-songwriter as well (@noflyzone).
Amy Blackwell: You’re incredibly well known for your role as Jude Harrison on the hit series Instant Star which started back in 2004 and ran until 2008. How does the character of Jude differ from you in real life?
Alexz Johnson: We were quite similar actually. More comparisons than differences I’d say. Sometimes she made different choices than I would make, but that may have been because I was a few years older than Jude.
Amy Blackwell: What was your experience like working on Instant Star for those four seasons?
Alexz Johnson: Amazing. It was a lot of work, but it was so rewarding being apart of such a great cast and crew.
Amy Blackwell: Since being on Instant Star you’ve appeared in a couple movies and even television episodes. Back in 2009, you appeared in the television movie called “Stranger With My Face” and you actually played twins. What was that experience like for you?
Alexz Johnson: Stranger With My Face was a real challenge because I was playing two characters. Working with Jeff Renfroe was amazing and I learnt a lot about the sublties in acting.
Amy Blackwell: You’ve worked with some other talented people such as Catherine Hicks who played Annie Camden on the hugely popular show 7th Heaven. Who is another actor or actress that you would love to work with in the future?
Alexz Johnson: I would love to work with Giovanni Ribisi, Woody Allen, Meryl Streep…
Amy Blackwell: Beyond acting you are also an insanely talented solo artist. You released your first solo studio album titled “Voodoo” back on March 9th 2010 which included eleven songs. How did you end up writing and going about recording this album and what made you name it what you did?
Alexz Johnson: The writing and recording of the Voodoo album happened very naturally. I had just parted ways with Epic Sony due to label shifts and I wanted a way to release all the music I had inside of me. I named it Voodoo after the last song Brendan and I wrote for the album, titled “Voodoo”. It felt as though a shield or spell has been placed over our music for so long. It felt right to name it that.
Amy Blackwell: Fan Question #1 (from Emily Stallard in Kitchener, ON):
Being that you obviously love all kinds of music, what record is a “must listen” for everyone out there?
Alexz Johnson: Foster The People (Torches) Sara Bareilles (Kaleidoscope Heart), and Landon Pigg (Coffee Shop EP).
Amy Blackwell: This past April 26th 2011 you went on to release the album called “Reloaded”. This album is really as it’s called, a remix of all eleven tracks that appeared on your first album. What made you decide to release this and was it a fun experience going at your songs differently?
Alexz Johnson: It felt like an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. It was a different process than I was used to, but I loved working with Demo Castellon and I feel he did a great job giving listeners a chance to hear the songs in a different light.
Amy Blackwell: Fan Question #2 (from Ange Lamb in Kansas, US):
What influences you when you dive into writing new songs?
Alexz Johnson: Life. The good, the hurt, the love. I hope to bring a lot of different things to the surface from listeners.
Amy Blackwell: Fan Question #3:
What is the hardest song to sing that you’ve written so far?
Alexz Johnson: A Little Bit.
Amy Blackwell: Fan Question #4 (from Edward McRhys in Italy):
Are you going to be coming to Europe at all (particularly Italy) in the near future to play any shows? Also, are you going to be including your songs Thief and Hunger Pains in a new album at all?
Alexz Johnson: I know I will get to Europe to play shows. I can’t say when yet, but I know I will.
Amy Blackwell: What’s happening for the rest of 2011 as far as touring and music goes?
Alexz Johnson: I’m pursuing different ways of getting my music out and focusing on a new album.
Amy Blackwell: Thanks so much for doing this interview! I’ve been a huge fan of you since I first discovered you back on Instant Star back in September of 2004. Keep doing what you’re doing because you are insanely talented and such an inspirational young woman to everyone! Thanks again! Best of luck in everything you do in the future. 🙂
Alexz Johnson: Thank YOU for putting together this interview Amy, and of course, for being such a supportive fan. I really appreciate it. 🙂
