Interview With What’s On Tap
Alexz got interviewed by OnTapOnline during the tour. The next date is in Fairfield, CT for archival purposes 🙂
Alexz Johnson’s passion for music is unrestrained; it’s obvious in the singer-songwriters’ eloquent, soulful tracks, in the power she puts into her singing, and in the effort she’s made to get ack on tour. Alexz started a Kickstarter campaign in order to make her current Skipping Stones tour possible. This week, she’ll be at Jammin’ Java in Vienna. You won’t want to miss out on this fan-made tour to promote Johnson’s latest work. On Tap recently spoke with the singer/songwriter about her passions and inspirations:
On Tap: You act as well as sing. Which were you attracted to first?
Alexz Johnson: Music has always been my first passion, I was lucky enough to stumble into acting at a young age.OT: You sing your music with so much passion; where does that passion come from?
AJ: When I write, I often pull from my experiences.. good or bad. I find it easier to communicate what I’m really feeling through lyrics sometimes.. the passion for me comes from the form of expression, I guess.OT: What inspires you when you’re writing music?
AJ: Anything real. I like to try and pull people up and out of themselves..OT: This tour was the outcome of a Kickstarter campaign. How did the campaign come about and what do you think was the best part about it?
AJ: I had spent about a year in Toronto hitting the pavement with no real results… I had a great band, but we didn’t have the backing at our indie label to tour Canada or play outside of Toronto very often. It drove me to eventually put my stuff in storage and move to NY. I felt I wanted a fresh start. It was actually one of the scariest times of my life! I decided then to launch a Kickstarter to tour the US and put a band together. The best part has been how much I’ve been learning managing myself in this independent way and also the opportunity to get to know the fans.. it’s been such an experience.OT: Have you played in the DC area before? What do you like most about the area?
AJ: I’ve actually never played DC! I had the opportunity to visit last weekend though and I loved it. The monuments were beautiful.. I’m really looking forward to playing [in the area]!OT: Have you had any memorable experiences on the tour so far?
AJ: We just started on July 25th… hit Toronto so far and that was awesome! We’re off to Boston right now! Yes.. we have wireless in the van, which is amazing!!OT: What are you looking forward to most?
AJ: Having the chance to play for the fans that have been so patient.. I can’t wait to share these songs. I’m also looking forward to visiting all these places in the US I haven’t seen yet!See Alexz Jonson perform on Wednesday, August 1 at Jammin’ Java: 227 Maple Ave. E.
