Alexz Johnson bursts out of the shadows with ‘Skipping Stone’
by Jessica Black on August 12, 2012Alexz Johnson is not even close to being new to the music scene, but she is coming into her own with her newest EP, Skipping Stone.
Although her path into singing had been predicted since she was a child, her role on Canada’s Instant Star was where it was solidified. The role, in which she played a girl that won an American Idol-style competition, led to three “Music from Instant Star” albums and two major label deals… both of which fell through.
But she would not be deterred and, though it took several years, went on to release Voodoo in 2010. The album was well received and was the perfect transition from her Instant Star success to budding solo artist. Johnson released two more albums on her own, the Basement Recordings, and started a Kickstarter campaign to fund Skipping Stone, which was released earlier this year.
Watch Alexz Johnson perform “Skipping Stone” in New York earlier this year:
Though it may have taken a while, and a rocky road along the way, Johnson’s fans have been such since her Instant Star days and are intensely devoted to her and everything she has done. But, perhaps because she has gone through a lot to get here, Skipping Stone is noticeably more mature. Johnson’s sound is not only raw and emotional but also powerful and fierce with a don’t-mess-with-me attitude. Definitely rooted in pop, Johnson effortlessly blends blues and country into her soulful sound, making it difficult to lump into just one genre.
She has solidified a band, solidified a sound and solidified a fan base. She is well on her way to becoming a star in her own right.
Alexz Johnson brings her soulful sound to the Mission Theater Wednesday August 15th, with Josh and Mer. Show at 7pm, $10.
