Here you will find quotes written by Alexz and Brendan for the meaning, or memory, of each song from The Basement Recordings III track-listing.

At Your Door
“Brendan wrote this song around the same time as ‘I Just Wanted Your Love” from The Basement Recordings I. It was a pitch for Instant Start, Season 3. I always had a soft place for this song..” Alexz

Hero
“Hero was written entirely by Brendan while I was shooting in Toronto. I fell in love with the song at first listen… it had a super fresh 80’s vibe and was a blast to sing on.. I love the line “get back to the soap!”. Alexz

James Dean
“We wrote this song to pitch for Instant Star. It never made the cut, but I always thought it was a super visual song. I had a poster in my bedroom growing up of James Dean..” Alexz

Punk Rock Chick
“This was another song written to pitch for Instant Star, Season One. When I first started getting into the character of Jude, Brendan and I were playing around with what her musical sound would be. We started with this, and grew from there..” Alexz

Small Dreams
“This goes way back! When Brendan and I wrote this, I was heavily into The Police and Cyndi Lauper. I’m not sure what that has to do with this song at all, but it’s a fact. I think being from a small town and having big dreams took play in some of the lyrics…” Alexz

I Fell
“Written around 2004 and a little after the song “That Girl”, this was one of those songs that helped me get started down the road of music production.” Brendan

Shutting You Out
“This was the song that influenced “Chicago”. Alexz and I felt we had something special here, so it led us to take pieces of it and form another song only 2 years later…” Brendan

The Pledge
“One of the many songs written when we we’re isolated at Oakwood’s in L.A writing for Capitol. This song best represents our insanity at the time and definitely is one of our most ridiculous songs we probably have ever created. I think we were trying to go for a Beach Boys feel. I guess this is what makes it so special.” Brendan

Veins
“Veins was written in the early 2000’s. I remember a notable producer listened to it and basically summed it up with one word, “It’s too long……” I was influenced by “Matthew Good Band’s” song “Apparitions.” Brendan

Where Is The Sky

“The last song from our first 3 song demo that was recorded at Trebas Institute in Vancouver, BC. Alexz and I have fond memories of that time.” Brendan
