alexI distinctly remember several years back, tuning in faithfully every week to CTV to watch Instant Star. Now, anyone that knows me knows that I am a bit of a television addict and still am — TV doesn’t control my life or anything; I just like my TV shows and Instant Star was one of my absolute favourites. I don’t know why I loved it so much, maybe it was because I was in love with the badass “Tommy Q“, the adorable Jamie and the slick boss man and “Godfather of Canadian Hip Hop” Maestro Fresh-Wes, but I think in the end it really all came down to the fact that I love music and that show had lots of it, and at an early age it curved my little teenage musical appetite. Instant Star was my guilty pleasure and I was “crushed” to put it mildly when the show ended — yeah I’d miss the characters but the thing I’d miss most was the new music every week and the steady stream of songs I’d get from Miss. Johnson.

Now, some people may think the show was “trivial”, make fun of me all you want for watching it but one thing that I was certain from the very beginning was Alexz Johnson’s talent — the raw talent that she exhibited in the show was the chief reason I watched it, above all the characters and the teenage storyline; Alexz Johnson was in fact a star. One of the highlights for me was Season One of the show when Alexz sang the beautifully written song “Skin“, I think it was a done deal from there — all Alexz’s talent and promise was summed up in that one song for me, you could really see that there was something special there.

Since then Alexz Johnson has evolved both musically and artistically and has developed into a wonderful singer-songwriter, making a name for herself outside of the show. If you’ve been following Alexz’s music, you’d know she has released some pretty stellar material, including the excellent 2008 studio album Weight, and the 2010 follow up Voodoo. Alexz continues to perfect her craft and in doing so has worked with some pretty big names, most recently David Kahne (Regina Spektor, Lana Del Rey, The Strokes) on some new material and the most recent single “American Dreamer“. I think it’s safe say this New Westminster, British Columbia native, now based in the Big Apple, is moving on up and doing big things.

American Dreamer serves as the lead single from Alexz’s forthcoming EP and the follow up to her 2012 Skipping Stone Extended Play. Fans have been patiently waiting for new material, endlessly jamming out to “Give Me Fire” and “Skipping Stone” and now have something new and fresh. As per usual Alexz doesn’t disappoint with her music, she is tireless with her efforts and delivers nothing but the best — you get that same “Alexz Johnson” glorious quality in this one — the song is strong with her striking voice. This song requires your undivided attention and uninterrupted listening — Alexz hits all the right notes with this beautiful gem.
