Alexz Johnson; the name may ring a bell if you watched the Disney Channel show So Weird, on which she starred as Annie Thelen, but this is not all she is known for. The 27-year-old Canadian singer and songwriter began writing music with her brother at the age of 12 and has not stopped since then. Johnson surpassed her goal to raise $30,000 through the website Kickstarter to fund her own tour in 2012, ending up raising $67,140 instead., Now she can embark on her 17-city tour throughout the United States and Canada. Johnson began her European tour with Ron Pope and Wakey!Wakey! on Jan. 31 and will continue throughout February.

We recently had the chance to speak with Johnson about her career thus far and this is what she had to say:

When did you first decide you wanted to be a musical artist?

Alexz: I was always singing since I was really young. I remember when I was around 14, I felt this was my passion [writing, singing]; haven’t looked back since.

How has Disney helped you be where you are today?

Alexz: I think everything is a stepping-stone. Being the lead of a series so young, it definitely gave me some good skills at a young age.

What has been the most difficult thing for you as an artist throughout your career?

Alexz: Internal stuff with major labels and that affecting my music releases.

Do you still work with your brother who you started writing songs with when you were 12?

Alexz: Brendan Johnson? Yes! He co-wrote half of the “HEART” EP with me, as well as other songs on the new album.

What is your most proud accomplishment so far as an artist?

Alexz: Probably my independent tours and definitely this new album material.

What are you looking forward to most for your upcoming European tour?

Alexz: It’s my first time playing in Europe, so that in itself is exciting. Also, having the opportunity to engage with an audience is always a gift. I’m excited to play my new songs.

What can your fans expect from your upcoming EP “HEART”?

Alexz: Soul, honesty and hopefully they feel a sense of survival and strength.

What do you think has been the most important element thus far that has allowed you to become as successful as you are?

Alexz: Persistence.

What is your greatest inspiration for creating music?

Alexz: Real experiences. Good or bad, love or loss.

How have you fans helped you be where you are today?

Alexz: It’s my fans that crowd funded my Skipping Stone tour and this new album. I’m incredibly grateful for their support and I can’t wait to get this album to them.
