Alexz Johnson may have once been a Disney Channel star, but she’s now a solid, soulful indie artist in her own right. She has now teamed up with relative newcomer Max Schneider for a month-long, cross-country tour that stopped at Webster Hall Tuesday night for an evening of fun and teen-friendly music.

Alexz Johnson Proves Herself at Webster Hall

“This is a song I wrote mostly in my bedroom. How cliche is that?” Johnson announced before launching into her rocking ballad about teenage heartbreak, “Thief.” She approached the whole evening with good humor and grace, from the technical difficulties at the start of the show to her screaming crowd of fans. With about two hundred attendees, the concert was full if not overflowing, but the fans’ enthusiasm counted for many more. And if most of them were women under the age of 25, Johnson knew it, and played to her audience well, with relatable songs about falling in love and what can go wrong afterward like new hit “American Dreamer.”

Johnson alternated between singing only accompanied by her guitar in slow, soulful numbers, and more upbeat songs backed by a keyboardist and percussionist. With a sound that reminded me of Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days are Over,” the young performer proved that she is a force to be reckoned with and a mature singer in her own right.
