Alexz Johnson Rocks Webster Hall
The talented singer-songwriter Alexz Johnston opened for Max Schneider at Webster Hall last Tuesday, bringing her original music and stunning vocals that filled the venue. Accompanied by Megan Cox on the keyboard and Seth Faulk on percussion, Johnson showcased songs from her soon-to-be-released album. The trio’s chemistry gave them a captivating stage presence, and their vibrant energy coupled with their acoustic sound had the audience dancing and tapping their feet.
Alexz Johnson’s sound is like a cross between Sheryl Crow and Taylor Swift’s early work, but her vocals are above and beyond both of these artists combined. In a world where auto-tune invades on so many studio recordings, it is refreshing to hear true live vocal talent. Her voice is nothing less than captivating and her songs are from the heart and sincere.
“My goal is to share and emote what I’ve been through,” says Johnson when commenting on her beautifully genuine number “Thank You For Breaking My Heart.” “I’m not interested in singing about bling or ‘be the best you can be,’ I want to sing about pain and life and survival… I share vulnerable stuff.” She certainly does- her songs run deep and foster a true connection with her audience members and fans.
The Canadian born singer has come a long way, starting her career in Vancouver and taking on musical acting roles, acting in the Disney series “So Weird” and spending four years writing music for her character on “Instant Star.” But despite her growing TV success, Johnson went for what she truly wanted. “I wanted to just be an artist and tour and not play to a bunch of background performers on a TV show, I wanted to really play.”
After getting signed by having two different albums fall through, Alexz decided to go independent and move to Mew York to “build the authentic way.” “I’m very careful as to what path I want to go down with my music,” says Johnson. “I’ve been doing it for a long time.” Her hard work and passion for her music certainly shows when she gets on stage. Her sense of self and personality shines truly through when she performs.
Alexz Johnson will be continuing to tour around the country into July, but assures that she will be back in New York soon on a headlining tour and encourages fans to look out for the release of her new album.
