Alexz Johnson Preps To Bring Her Unique Flare To Charlotte
By Hunter HeilmanIf you guys ever watched “The N” when you were younger, you know very well of Alexz Johnson from “Instant Star” along with her unique style of music. On her new tour, Johnson makes her stop in Charlotte on Dec. 4, and brings everything wonderful about her music with it. “I just wanted to focus this time around on writing more mature songs and deeper songs. The feeling changes with where I’m at in my life and stylistically, it’s just what I’m into right now.” Johnson said about her new album “Let ‘Em Eat Cake”, and how she takes on writing each new album.
Johnson, hailing from Western Canada, has had a lengthy career (for her young age of 28), getting started at age 13 on the Disney show “So Weird”. Johnson also breaks off into acting when she’s not doing music, one notable role being that of Erin Ulmer in the 2006 horror film, “Final Destination 3″ (in which I got to fangirl over today). When asked how she stayed grounded being such a young actress/musician and not succumbing to the stereotypical “Disney Kid Gone Bad” persona, she gave the advice to young artists to “Make sure you keep very grounded and honest people around you. If you’re passionate about what you do, you’ll be okay. If you want to just be famous, that’s going to be the dangerous path.”
If you listen to “Let ‘Em Eat Cake” or her 2010 album “Voodoo”, it’s apparent that Johnson’s voice is unique. She has what many people can’t accomplish in one voice, incredible power and palpable fragility. There’s something special about a voice that can belt the high notes, and keep the sensitivity of her quieter moments in her music, it’s something you don’t see often. What’s even more interesting is that it’s hard to pin a genre on her, you could label some songs indie rock, some songs pop, and go on for ages with each piece, which signifies that there is something for everyone with her music, another aspect not seen in many artists currently.
Johnson is clearly passionate about what she does, you can hear it in her voice and how excited she is about sharing her music with her fans. “I always want to put on a good show, I want people to want to come back. I want people to just enjoy themselves.” Johnson says about her new tour. When asked about her goal on her newest album with her fans, Johnson stated “I hope they find it beautiful, as long as they can connect to my music, and that they feel like it’s real and truthful. Maybe someone can connect it with something going in their life, that’s all I can hope for, that I can share my art. I just do what my soul needs to do.”
Alexz Johnson hits Charlotte on December 4th at 9:00PM at The Double Door Inn, tickets are $10. The event is 21 & over (or else I would be there in a heartbeat).
