Operation: Hurricane Week 3
Week 3: This week is probably going to be the first rough week for those unfamiliar with having any place of theirs to call their own on the internet. This is also an IMPORTANT week and all who are participating or planning to should do THIS week if they do no others, which I’ll explain why in more detail as I go along.
This week I need you guys to create a mini-webpage for Alexz.
Don’t panic. I know some people may give up just at that thought of having to do it. One major reason is right in front of all of our faces. Look at the first three pages of Search Results for Google when you look up “Alexz Johnson.” You’ll find a few fan sites, then sites you know have authority… or not. These are sites like Last.fm, askmen, perfectpeople.net, and lots of lyrics based websites.
What’s wrong with this picture?
This week is about giving Google more to index that is related to Alexz Johnson that will actually help her out and get more fans for those interested. I think you’d probably agree if anyone is looking for her lyrics, they probably already know who she is. We’re not interested in those people. We want people who search her name to find out about her and who she is, what makes her unique, WHY they should continue learning more about her and her work.
THAT is what I want you do with your mini-webpages. I have one at Squidoo that needs updating since I launched this site, but look it over to give you some ideas on your own webpage. Some people can run out and do this now and some others may need an outline since they may not know what to say. So, use this general list for ideas:
- Introduce them to Alexz through her biography
- Tell them how you became a fan
- Favorite songs
- Favorite TV/Movie she has done
- Where they can go to learn more
- Add YouTube clips
- Use pictures to make it interesting
- Any other stories people should know about how Alexz affected you
Where do you go to get these webpages? Glad you asked. 🙂 There’s lots of websites online that will give you free webspace to make your own page once you sign up. The more popular ones are Angelfire, Google Knols, and Squidoo. If you don’t want to use any of those a fantastic list is located by clicking here. Their information isn’t completely up-to-date since Angelfire will give you 20MB free and not the 5MB they report.
These services typically have an Advanced and Basic editor. If you are more familiar with HTML the Advanced Editor may be exactly what you need. For those new to this I suggest using their Basic editor.
As you make this page, think if you were trying to get your friends into Alexz. What would you tell them about her? What would you show them that she’s done? What pictures would you use? Where you would put your emphasis on in different aspects of her career? What songs would you start them with? What songs would be good to listen to after those?
Now, this is why this week is the most important week yet…
How This Helps Alexz: As you saw from the Search Results it’s not ideally populated with sites we would want people to go to if we were trying to get them into her music and acting. So, we’re taking the first step to CHANGING that content in Google’s searches into our own. Part of what we need to do is create Alexz Johnson content online. There isn’t a huge amount of it indexed in the search engines. It’s up to us to provide the content we want about her to help her gain fans and support.
Making your own mini-website for Alexz will gives the search engines another site to put into their indexes about her. The lack of this content makes it appear there isn’t a terribly huge demand for her for those who use search engines like Google. So, we’re going to try to give them an abundance of websites for people to find and read. And since you’re reading this, and a fan, I’m sure it’ll be GOOD and POSITIVE about her 🙂 :p
This step is important. For some quick links back to your site so Google can find it, simply change the links over you did in Week 1. Submitting it to Digg should also make Google index it fairly quickly.
I’ll possibly get a lot of questions about this week. Leave those in the comments or for very problematic things, message me on Twitter.
